Damaged Truss Members

24/8/2019

Modifying a roof truss places stress on the timber trusses around the modified one as well as changing the load dynamics of the truss itself. The web that was removed from this truss seen below, supported the truss load from the tiled roof above. Removing the nail plate from the other web member on the opposing side has made this truss unstable and likely to distort and collapse. Rectification is urgently required and a structural engineer is required to remedy the situation. As the property is a rental, the duty of care for the tenants family is paramount. Even if it was just a house on the market, it should be pulled from sale until repaired.
Truss plates when trusses are not adequately secured or braced, can pull out, also leaving the webbing loose and the truss able to collapse.
The bent truss shown below is due to an unsupported top chord. Supported by tile battens on one side, but as part of this roof was conventional cut with rafters following a ridge supported by girder trusses, the unsupported side has bowed. The maximum allowable bow is 50mm. No truss should ever be altered in any way from the original design.

Thanks for helping me understand that a truss roof can be caused by an unsupported top chord. With that in mind, I should look for a company that I can trust to fix or replace the truss if needed. It's because I noticed the issue in our shed in the backyard while I was about to get some supplies this morning.

Thanks for pointing out that we need a structural engineer to help with rectifying damage in the trusses which has to be done urgently. In that case, I need to tell my husband to look for a professional to hire this weekend. We both noticed the issue with the roof of the shed in the backyard, and it might collapse when the snow comes if not fixed.

Thank you for mentioning that slack webbing and truss plates can be caused by insufficient truss bracing or security, causing truss plates to come out. My grandfather has seen that his home's roof is bending. I'll advise him to have the specialist in roof trusses install truss plates at his home so that it is more secure.

It helped when you said that the durability of the roof trusses should be maintained to prevent them from breaking. Yesterday, my best friend told me he was planning to have roof trusses in their home because of their strength and flexibility function. He asked if I had any idea what would be the best option to consider. Thanks to this useful article, I'll remind him that consulting a trusted truss manufacturing company can help him provide more detailed information.
